Bird’s Nest Centerpiece

Bird’s Nest Centerpiece

What You’ll Need:• Clay dish from a terra-cotta pot (we used a 12-inch dish)
• A long bundle of raffia
• Spanish moss
• Scraps of ribbon, feathers and small twigs or branches
• Two pots of mini-daffodils
• As many potted containers of pansies that will fit into the terra-cotta dish (we used four)
• Small brown or blue eggs (optional)

Directions:

1. Gather a bundle of Spanish moss and raffia, then pull and twist the two together until you form a bird-nest shape that will fit into your dish. (It should be three inches higher than the sides of your dish.)
2. Weave through the nest some long scraps of ribbon, feathers and small twigs or branches.
3. Remove all the potted pansies and daffodils from their containers and place them closely together in the nest.
4. For an extra touch, add small eggs to the arrangement.
5. Using a spray bottle of water, mist the flowers once a day so they stay moist. The flowers should stay healthy this way for up to two weeks. After that time, you can take them out of the nest and plant them in the ground.

Chicken Feeder Lamps

A chicken feeder with a wire cage is a perfect piece to create an industrial-looking hanging lamp.

1. Clean the feeder and cage with soap and hot water. Allow to dry, then use medium steel wool to clean heavy rust from the metal, until it reaches a nice patina.

2. Using a 3/8″ metal drill bit, drill a hole through the bottom of the feeder, directly in the center, allowing clearance for a lamp kit. We used a cotton-covered wire to assemble our own lamp kit. (If you decide to go this route, you’ll need a socket, a switch, a plug end, and a hook, all of which are available at Lowes.) Nice cotton-covered wires are available at some small hardware stores for about $1 per foot, or you can find them online at sundialwire.com. Otherwise, purchase a swag lamp kit ($14.93; amazon.com).

3. Follow package instructions to assemble the fixture, then add a light bulb. Snap the cage on to the feeder, and you’re ready to hang your lamp!

Rake Stemware Holder

Take advantage of your vertical wall space by hanging a rake head and suspending stemware from its tines. We found one of these rakes at the Country Living Fair in Columbus, Ohio, for $3, but you’ll likely find them at a yard sale.

1. Remove the handle. Carefully cut it off (or ask your local hardware store to do it) and sand the cut end.

2. Use a 3/16″ metal drill bit to drill two holes per rake head directly into the center of the handle’s back side, spacing them about an inch apart. Using either 3″ toggle bolts or 3″ anchor screws (available at any hardware store), screw the rake heads into the wall — making sure they’re hanging upside down and are level. You can use the same trick in your bedroom for a practical tie-and-belt rack or to hang your most tangle-prone necklaces.

Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce for Christmas

If you are looking for an easy, inexpensive gift to give to family and friends, you can’t go wrong with homemade hot fudge sauce. Seriously, who doesn’t like hot fudge!?

homemade hot fudge sauceYou may already have everything you need on hand to make a couple of jars of hot fudge sauce. I figured that even if you have to go out and buy canning jars to put the hot fudge in, you are looking at less than $2 a jar for this delicious, homemade treat.

Hot fudge sauce is not just for ice cream…it can be put in chocolate milk, hot chocolate, even coffee!

Note: These jars need to be stored in the refrigerator.

Here is what you will need:

Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce

2 cups white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup baking cocoa
4 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla

In a saucepan, stir together the dry ingredients. Add margarine and water, stirring well. Bring to a boil, and continue boiling for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove pan from heat and stir in the vanilla. The hot fudge will thicken as it cools.

This recipe is very forgiving. I accidently put in 3 cups of white sugar and the sauce turned out very thin. I added another 2 tablespoons of flour and cooked it for another 10 minutes, and the sauce still thickened and turned out great.

This recipe makes enough for approximately 1 1/2 pint jars, so if you double the recipe, you will have enough for 3 pints.

This hot fudge sauce makes a very attractive gift. You can tie a ribbon around the jar lid, or add a scrap of fabric under the jar ring for decoration. Give the jar by itself or as part of a gift basket containing other items for ice cream sundaes. After your friends taste this hot fudge sauce they will never buy it from the store again!
